The temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ, or Jaw joint) is a joint that often is not considered as a joint that can contribute to symptoms. It is however a highly innovated joint that has several muscles (including the strongest muscle in the body – the masseter) involved in controlling its movements. The TMJ has two joints that work in unison to allow us to talk, eat and swallow. When these joints are not working in unison it can cause many symptoms. These include (but not limited to):
- Jaw pain including clicking, popping or grating sounds
- Mouth discomfort with limited opening or deviation when opening
- Clenching or grinding
- Head pain and headaches
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Eye pain
- Ear pain including hissing, buzzing or ringing
Ongoing TMJ dysfunction can result in degeneration of the joint which can impact lifestyle and everyday activities.
Assessment of the jaw to identify changes in its range of motion and altered muscle tone can be addressed and followed by adjustments to correct the altered biomechanics. This is a process that Danielle has been trained to perform.
If you are experiencing any TMJ/jaw problems, please discuss this with Danielle on your next visit.
